Maroon Pig Publishing

Maroon Pig Publishing is the imprint, or publishing name, under which author Adrian Doyle self publishes his books. That said, it is our plan to expand.

These days, it is nigh on impossible to find an agent let alone a publisher. The requirements of most agents can be distilled down to a narrow range of book types and subjects. Authors can waste months of their lives waiting for a reply from agents that never come.

This has led to the birth of what are termed hybrid publishers. These publishers ask authors to pay the up front costs of publishing including any or all of editing, cover design, typesetting, listing with distributors and marketing. The general consensus is that hybrid publishers, having covered their costs, are quicker to move on to new books rather than make a lot of effort in book marketing. They can also be expensive. Authors can end up well out of pocket if they are not careful.

In general, however a book is published, it falls upon the author to do most, if not all, of the marketing.

Many authors fall back on self publishing. There is a wealth of information out there on how to do this. However, it’s not that straightforward and involves a lot of work if it is to be done properly. While hybrid publishers get a lot of flak, we have to admit that their prices are not unreasonable given the amount of work involved in publishing. It’s not an easy call.

Bearing all that in mind, Maroon Pig Publishing plans to offer services to authors (in the UK) wishing to self publish. The plan is to position ourselves somewhere between traditional and hybrid publishers. By that, we mean we’ll offer a shopping list of services so authors can pick and choose where they want help and what they wish to do themselves. These will be defined in more detail shortly – watch this space.
